The specific song he is writing has to do with his meeting with some ducks, and the event is probably inspired to Grahame by Oscar Wilde’s short story “The Devoted Friend” included in The Happy Prince (1888), where we precisely see a Water Rat meeting some ducks. Nancy Barnhart’s illustration of Rat scribbling poetry We had already seen him in chapter I, “murmuring poetry-things over to himself”. As Annie Gauger points out in her Annotated Wind in the Willows, if the story is a miniature epic, Rat is a romantic bard, whose main occupation is telling stories, improvising songs and poetry, writing. Specifically, the story opens with Rat doing one of the things he does best: sitting by the river and singing a song. The second tale in Kenneth Grahame’s Wind in the Willows takes up from where we left our two favourite characters: Rat, in his river-house, and Mole who ended up living with him. Shelidon Janu2 Comments on The Wind in the Willows (2): The Open Road If you loved Lee Child's Jack Reacher, Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp or Mark Dawon's John Milton, you will love The Terminal List and the James Reece series! Praise for Jack Carr and the James Reece series: 'This is seriously good. With nothing left to lose, Reece directs the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare towards revenge, ruthlessly targeting his enemies without regard for the laws of combat or the rule of law. But the deaths don't stop there, and Reece soon discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. On deployment in Afghanistan, Lieutenant Commander James Reece's entire team is killed in a catastrophic ambush. **SOON TO BE A TV SERIES STARRING CHRIS PRATT** 'With a particular line in authentic tradecraft, this fabulously unrelenting thrill-ride was a struggle to put down' Mark Dawson, bestselling author of The Cleaner James Reece has nothing to live for and everything to kill for in the debut thriller from former Navy SEAL Jack Carr, perfect for fans of Lee Child and David Baldacci. The mythology was elegantly implemented in the work, and the plunge into surreal imagery was like a mash-up of Jeff VanderMeer & David Lynch. I appreciated these poems on a level of craftsmanship, as well as emotional and lyrical connection. I enjoyed this poet’s quiet, evocative language and poem structure. Every state has its own invasive species, so although these are specific to Minnesota, the poems are relatable. It also doesn’t hurt that I have published a chapbook of poems whose title includes “A Field Guide To…”, so how could I not feel drawn to this book? Though I hail from Florida and now live on the West Coast, I think that if you love nature, the outdoors, and flora/fauna, then you would appreciate this book. I love conceptual poetry collections, eco-horror (or eco-dystopia, your choice), and speculative poetry, so this book hit every high note for me. I will probably end up buying a print copy because the vintage illustrations of the invasive species were lovely, but I feel a screen doesn’t do them justice. I have enjoyed every book I have read from Interstellar Flight Press, and this one was no exception. Catriona is a ragged 15 year old who must suffer the cruel bullying of her cousin Alice, but who will gladly endure all the pinches and insults in the world for another moment with Simon, for whom she spends the next five years secretly pining, all the while growing into a lush and plucky Scottish beauty. When we first meet Catriona Kincaid, she is dropping in – literally – on her cousin’s clandestine seduction by dashing young Naval officer Simon Westcott. That may have been a good thing, as I really had no expectations, but it also turned into a disappointment, because the book did not at all wow me. In fact, Some Like It Wicked is my very first Teresa Medeiros book. JREVIEW: Some Like It Wicked by Teresa Medeiros What starts out as an idle daydream to embark on ' a travel to end all travels' turns into something far greater: an epic year-long 5000-kilometre walk from Trafalgar Square in London to Morocco and the threshold of the Sahara Desert. When Paula Constant and her husband, Gary, attempt to break away from the conventional 9-to-5 routine, a few weeks lazing in a resort or packed in a tour bus is not what they have in mind. Postcards from the Edge is more than a book about stardom and drugs. The first third of the story recounting 30 days of actress Suzanne Vale's life in rehab was pretty intense, and nerve-racking reading (for me), and if you can get through the lives and stories of drug dealers, addicts and rather disgusting. This stunning literary debut chronicles Suzanne’s vivid, excruciatingly funny experiences inside the clinic and as she comes to terms with life in the outside world. POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE is a semi-autobiographical novel based on the turbulent life of Carrie Fisher. Just as Fisher’s first film role-the precocious teenager in Shampoo-echoed her own Beverly Hills upbringing, her first book is set within the world she knows better than anyone else: Hollywood. When we first meet the extraordinary young actress Suzanne Vale, she’s feeling like “something on the bottom of someone’s shoe, and not even someone interesting.” Suzanne is in the harrowing and hilarious throes of drug rehabilitation, trying to understand what happened to her life and how she managed to land in a “drug hospital.” This bestselling Hollywood novel by the witty author of Wishful Drinking and Shockaholic that was made into a movie starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine. |
